Meeting Needs no Other Charity Meets
The Kidney Foundation sponsored a social worker training session to staff in the ProMedica system featuring speaker Sherrell Turner MSW, LSW, Master Facility Social Worker Fresenius Medical Care – Northern Ohio Region (left) and organizer Shanna Turner, a primary care social worker and health navigator with ProMedica.
The Kidney Foundation is the place that social workers serving kidney patients call when their patients need help. Unlike some national kidney charities, KFNWO provides direct financial assistance in the form of transportation, medications or nutrition supplements throughout our 20-county service region.  Our board just voted to increase eligibility for ongoing assistance to 200% of the federal poverty level from 150% to serve more people.

Our emergency assistance program, which has no financial qualification, offers $150 once per year.  In August we provided emergency assistance to 52 people in the form of blood pressure cuffs, cab rides, TARPs tickets, utility bills, nutrition supplements like Ensure/Boost and even one hotel stay. That hotel stay helped a family get out of the recent heat wave and have a couple days of respite since they have no electricity at home.  We are 100% donor funded and need your help to continue helping those in need.

Outreach coordinator Paul ViaFranco
Kelly Mofield, executive director, was pleased to welcome Erika Krause, Northwest Ohio Regional Representative from Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office, to discuss ways the Senator’s staff can be of assistance to the Kidney Foundation.
Fall has been a busy season of health fairs, symposiums, and community events for Foundation staff.  Paul ViaFranco attended the Owens Community College Volunteer FairSylvania Senior Expo, and Friendship Community Health Fair in September while Kelly Mofield represented KF at a transplantation symposium sponsored by UTMC.  Both attended a virtual workshop sponsored by KF for social workers in the ProMedica health system on the psychosocial effects of dialysis on patients.  Please let us know if we can attend your community health event to provide information on kidney health and KFNWO services.

In 2021, musician, drummer and kidney patient Kyle Peterson had his life cut short by kidney disease at the age of 45.  His family, friends and former bandmates have gathered the past two years to raise funds for Diabetes Youth Services and the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio. This year’s gathering is this Saturday, Oct. 5 at Great Black Swamp Brewery, 2250 Tedrow Road in Toledo from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.  Join us for great music, food trucks and more.
